My name is Marvin Ortanez, Founder of TrainYourBodyandMind. I am a Certified Personal Trainer, Fitness Nutrition Specialist, Mixed Martial Arts Conditioning Specialist, Movement and Performance Therapy Specialist, Mental Strength/Toughness Coach, Mindfulness/Yin Yoga Teacher, Doctor of Education in Sport and Performance Psychology Student, FUTURE Doctor of Education (EdD-SPP), Certified Mental Performance Consultant (CMPC), Certified Performance and Sport Scientist (CPSS), Enshin Itto Ryu Battojutsu (Japanese Swordsmanship) Sensei.
Maintaining an active lifestyle has always been a big part of my life. I was physically active in my teens with basketball, breakdancing, popping, waving, foot work, freestyle, weight training, and Karate. In my late teens-early 20’s I started to explore Kung Fu and Krav Maga while training mostly in home functional fitness (P90x I,II,III). I began training in martial arts again in 2017 alongside Bodybuilding, Powerlifting, Power building, and Functional Training goals. Although, it wasn’t until 2019 when I became consistent in the study and practice of martial arts. My martial arts journey continued in Systema (Health/Breathing/Combat) for a few years while studying and cross-training in others (Combat SAMBO (Gi/No-Gi), Ukrainian Knife Fighting, Bujinkan Kenjutsu, and Shurikenjutsu). During this year is when I fully transitioned from a Bodybuilding, Powerlifting, Power building, Functional Training journey to a Hybrid Training, Strength/Conditioning, Cross-Training, and Performance journey. Shortly after, I began to train and explore in Tactical Running, Muay Thai, Judo, Enshin Itto Ryu Battojutsu, Jinen Ryu Tantojutsu, and Bo Shurikenjutsu. After much reflection, reinvention, and exploration my current martial art journey is in Muay Thai, Enshin Itto Ryu Battojutsu, Judo, and No-Gi Jiu-Jitsu.
In addition to physical/mental strength and conditioning and martial arts, I am incorporating other forms of physical/mental activity into the weekly training routine. Yoga is one of them. I have been practicing many forms of yoga throughout the past decade and currently practice Yin Yoga exclusively. Furthermore, I run for health, fitness, self-defense, conditioning, endurance, stamina, coordination, speed, agility, quickness, proprioception, and kinesthetic development.
I enjoy maintaining an active lifestyle, which makes me feel great! I appreciate the health benefits such as cancer prevention, heart disease, bone health, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, a reduction depression, and decreased injuries from falls (Physical Activity Guidelines, Second Edition). I will always find time to exercise despite a busy schedule and encourage others to do so as well. A little goes a long way and the sum of daily efforts pays off in the long-term.
